Get SailTac on the boat computer

The installer is free and complete — there's nothing to set up first. A license key unlocks it, and the 30-day trial key costs nothing either.

The public installer isn't posted yet. Email scott@sailtacperformance.com and we'll send it to you directly, or start a trial and we'll include it.

What you need

  • Windows 10 64-bit (version 1809 or newer) on the boat — a laptop, a mini PC or a tablet running full Windows.
  • NMEA 0183 instrument data over the network, from a gateway such as a Yacht Devices or Actisense unit. NMEA 2000 works through a gateway too.
  • A Wi-Fi network aboard if you want crew devices to see the displays.
  • Internet at the dock, to fetch weather and cache charts. None needed once you cast off.

What the installer does

  • Installs for all users, with Desktop and Start Menu shortcuts.
  • Bundles everything it needs — no runtime, framework or database to install first.
  • Opens TCP port 3001 in Windows Firewall so crew devices on the boat Wi-Fi can connect.
  • Keeps your data in your own Windows profile, and registers a normal uninstaller.

What it doesn't do

  • No account to create, and no cloud service to depend on.
  • Your race logs, polars and crew data stay on your own machine.
  • No connection needed while racing — it only reaches the internet when you ask it to fetch weather or charts.
Expect this

Windows will warn you. Here's why, honestly.

SailTac's installer isn't code-signed yet, so Windows shows a blue “Windows protected your PC” screen the first time you run it. That warning means Windows hasn't seen this file often enough to vouch for it — not that anything is wrong with it.

A signing certificate is on the way, and this page will say so when it lands. Until then we'd rather tell you what you're about to see than have you find out alone at the dock. Check the SHA-256 above against your download if you want to be certain you have the file we published.

Getting past it

  1. 1Run the installer. A blue window appears: Windows protected your PC.
  2. 2Click the small More info link in that window.
  3. 3A Run anyway button appears. Click it, and the installer runs normally.
  4. 4Windows asks for administrator permission — that's the installer opening the port your crew's devices connect on.

First run

From download to displays in about ten minutes

Do this at the dock, on shore power, with internet — not five minutes before the gun.

    Run the installer

    Double-click the downloaded file and follow the prompts. It asks for administrator permission because it installs for the whole machine and opens the port your crew's devices connect on.

    Start SailTac once

    The first run creates the folder where your polar, sails, crew and races will live. You can close it again straight away.

    Enter your license key

    Paste the key from your email. It only needs entering once, on any device — it unlocks SailTac for every device on the boat.

    Connect your instruments

    In Settings, add your NMEA 0183 source — the IP address and port of your gateway. The configuration is saved, so it reconnects by itself after a reboot.

    Bring the crew on

    On any phone or tablet on the boat's Wi-Fi, open http://<boat-computer-ip>:3001. That's it — no app store, nothing to install.

If crew devices can't connect

The installer opens the port for you, but some setups need it done by hand. On the boat computer, open PowerShell as administrator and run:

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="SailTac" dir=in action=allow protocol=TCP localport=3001

Then open http://<boat-computer-ip>:3001 on any device on the boat's Wi-Fi. More in the setup guide.
